A Royal City Together with another six important Sardinian towns (Sassari, Alghero, Bosa, Oristano, Iglesias and Cagliari), Castelsardo was awarded the title of Città Regia (Royal City) by the Crown of Aragona in the 15th century. A Historic Mediterranean Town It is one of 54 towns in the Mediterranean area that founded the ‘Permanent Summit of Historic Mediterranean Towns’ to protect and make the most of local cultures. In the Club of ‘The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” The National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) entered the town into this club that groups together the most interesting medieval Italian villages. Part of the ‘VillageTerraneo’ This international association brings together 20 diverse towns across the south of Europe which are linked by well-preserved and picturesque historic town centres.
